What the Client Needed
A creative director working from home needed a dedicated studio space without consuming garden area. The brief called for a single-storey rear extension under Permitted Development that would serve as both a home office during the week and an entertaining space at weekends. The existing kitchen was tiny and disconnected from the garden.

Before & After

- Exposed steel beams & birch plywood

What We Delivered
We built a 6-metre rear extension under PD rights, avoiding the 8-week planning wait. The extension features a flat green roof with wildflower seeding, a fully glazed rear wall with sliding doors, and an integrated desk niche that doubles as a breakfast bar. Exposed steel beams and birch plywood cladding give the space a warm, industrial character. The green roof reduces rainwater runoff by 60% and provides insulation that keeps the space comfortable year-round.
“I needed a space that could switch between deep-focus work and weekend entertaining. APEX nailed the brief — the sliding doors completely open the room to the garden. It's transformed how I live and work.”
