What the Client Needed
An architect couple wanted to convert their Edwardian loft into a home office with north-facing skylights for even, glare-free light. The existing hip-to-gable arrangement limited floor area, so they proposed an L-shaped rear dormer to maximise usable space. Haringey Council required a heritage assessment because the street falls within a locally listed 'Area of Special Character.'

Key Architectural Features
- L-shaped dormer profile
- Three north-facing Velux Integra skylights
- Acoustic floor insulation
- Cantilevered oak staircase with glass balustrade

What We Delivered
The L-shaped dormer delivered 32 m² of uninterrupted workspace with 2.3 m head height wall-to-wall. Three north-facing Velux Integra skylights provide consistent, diffused daylight ideal for screen work. We installed acoustic insulation between the new floor joists to isolate the workspace from the family bedrooms below. A cantilevered oak staircase with glass balustrade replaced the original loft ladder, turning the ascent into an architectural feature.
“As architects ourselves, we had exacting standards. APEX met every one. The staircase alone gets more compliments than anything else in the house.”
