What the Client Needed
A food writer and her partner wanted a kitchen that could host supper clubs for 12 guests while maintaining an intimate family feel on weekday evenings. The existing galley kitchen was just 7 m² with a single window overlooking a paved courtyard. They wanted the extension to feel like a 'garden room' — more glass than wall — while keeping energy bills manageable.

Before & After

Key Architectural Features
- Fully glazed gable end
- Frameless corner glazing
- 5-metre island with downdraft extraction
- Built-in banquette seating

What We Delivered
We delivered a 30 m² rear extension with a fully glazed gable end and frameless corner glazing that dissolves the boundary between kitchen and garden. A 5-metre island with integrated downdraft extraction serves as the cooking station for supper clubs, while a built-in banquette along the party wall creates a cosy family dining nook. Triple-glazed units and underfloor heating connected to an air-source heat pump keep the space warm without excessive running costs — the owners report energy bills actually decreased after the extension.
“I've hosted 15 supper clubs since the extension was finished. Every single guest asks who built it. The frameless corner glazing makes you feel like you're cooking in the garden.”
